Good morning from the writing cave!

Exciting news! My copies of The Ancestor arrived this week! Here I am, opening them and seeing my book for the first time.

It is such a gift to have my books but they have arrived in a moment of uncertainty.

There has been a lot of disruption in the world this past week, with many people being laid off or losing their jobs. The film and book world is no exception. Not only are booksellers out of jobs, but many authors are finding themselves scrambling to save their books when there are no venues for readings, no booksellers to hand sell books they love, and no way for authors to meet their readers.  This article in the New York Times gives one perspective about how the publishing business is handling this crisis.

James Daunt, the new owner of Barnes and Noble, has this to say about it:

“The very functions of the literary world have been put in an induced coma,” said James Daunt, the chief executive of Barnes & Noble. “There’s going to be a barren period when all the books that were to be published now and over the next few months are going to be shunted forward into the calendar. Fewer books will see the light of day.”

Well, The Ancestor IS going to see the light of day, because it is coming out April 7th, bookstores or no bookstores! While many publishers are cancelling books, mine has confidence in my fans and readers, and believes they will order a hardcover copy online from one of the many online bookstores.

To receive a signed copy of the book, you can still pre-order from Oblong Books. You can also buy the book on AmazonBarnes & NobleBooks-a-Million.

Listen to an audio version from Audible or HarperCollins.com.

Or read a digital book.

I believe my readers will rally to help my book in this scary moment, and am confident that The Ancestor will be an engrossing distraction to the anxiety of uncertain times.

As such, I have been making plans for my virtual book tour! All of my live events were cancelled, and so we’re moving online.  I’m so excited about this tour, and know that it is going to be so much fun. I’m going to do a short reading and take questions from participants.

Below is a list of events that I will be hosting. Each event is limited to 100 people, so please be sure to put the dates in your calendar so that you don’t miss them.

Here are the Zoom links for each of the events, which will be shared again in a reminder email 30 minutes prior to each event:

April 7th, 7pm EST – The Ancestor Reading
April 9th, 7pm EST  HWA Horror Writers Reading & Discussion
April 10th, 6:30 pm EST – The Ancestor & Crypto-Z Audio Drama Discussion
April 14th, 7pm EST – Reading with author Janelle Brown

You will need Zoom to attend, and you can download that here. It is free and easy, so sign up now!

Many of you expressed interested in attending one of my virtual book events. I hope you will. I know so many of you from email, but it would be great to have a moment together ‘in person’ (or as close as we can get to that in these times of contagion).

Thank you so much for your support through this difficult time. Now is the moment for community, and even thought we cannot meet in person, I feel that this is a chance for us to be together to celebrate books, storytelling and our shared love of writing.

May your week be filled with inspiration and good work.

Yours,
